Hard Problems
MOD have recognised a series of ‘Hard Problems’ that impact their ability to effectively acquire and maintain military software
systems.
- Safety and Security at Military Tempo
Safety and security assurance typically cause delivery delays because they are carried out post development. Assurance activities
need to be integrated into the development process so that they are undertaken concurrently with system evolution.
- Integrated Engineering Management and Novel Software Engineering Methods
Integrated engineering management seeks to ensure that engineering concerns are balanced with cost and schedule issues. This needs
to extend to novel Software Engineering methods to realise their potential cost and time benefits.
- Supporting and Assuring Legacy and Open Systems
Defence systems have long life spans and high maintenance costs due, in part, to the need to support legacy systems. Open systems
offer a potential approach to achieving greater system longevity but strategies for assurance need to be found, which also enable
legacy integration.
The SSEI uses the ‘Hard Problems’ to focus the applied research programme, and to frame research results as solutions to problems
, for engaging with end users.
